New Alcoa trainees make a start

Eighteen new trainees will enhance their skills over the next year after commencing operator traineeships at Alcoa’s three Western Australian alumina refineries.

Out of the more than 1100 people who applied for the highly sought-after nationally accredited traineeships, nine men and nine women were selected to take on the roles at the company’s Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries.

Including TAFE studies and practical assessments throughout the year, trainees will finish with a Certificate II in Process Plant Operations and the operating skills needed to safely contribute at Alcoa’s alumina refineries.

Among the new recruits is Misty Stevens, from Falcon, who said she was attracted to Alcoa traineeship given the opportunities it provided and the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“I applied for this position as I was wanting a fresh start filled with opportunity, to advance my knowledge and life experiences, as well as to reach for the stars and show that anything is possible, and Alcoa can me offer that,” Misty said.

Recruitment for Alcoa’s 2023 Traineeship Program is expected to commence mid-2023.

Alcoa has trained more than 2500 apprentices, trainees and graduates in the 60 years it has been operating bauxite mines and alumina refineries in the Kwinana, Peel and Upper South west areas of WA.
